Rural Electric CooperativeYouth Tour
Kent Kirby & Laney Jackson - 2009 |
Lamar Electric Cooperative sends two local students on the Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour each summer. The Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour started in 1957 when Texas electric cooperatives sent groups of students to Washington to work in Senator Lyndon Johnson's office. In 1964, NRECA began to coordinate this program, and since then the Youth Tour has grown to almost 1,500 students participating each year. These students learn about the role of rural electric cooperatives and witness governmental representatives in action. The Youth Tour has three main objectives: 1. To educate youths on all aspects of rural electrification in order to promote a better understanding of the value of rural electric cooperatives. 2. To provide an opportunity for youths to visit monuments, government buildings and cooperative-related organizations in order to become familiar with the historical and political environment of their nation's capital. 3. To provide an opportunity for youths to meet elected officials in order to better understand how their federal government works.
